Norton Says the King Memorial Dedication Calls D.C. to Finish King's Unfinished Freedom Work Here E-mail

D.C.'s Delegate, Eleanor Holmes Norton, spoke eloquently before the new memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on August 10, 2011 about the need to finish Dr. King's work in the District of Columbia by bringing freedom and statehood to the one place in the United States that "stands alone, singled our without a vote and without the most elementary of rights."  She urged Americans to not just dedicate his memorial, but to also "dedicate ourselves to King's ideals and to his goals: and bring statehood to D.C.

Why D.C.'s Attorney General Can't Prosecute Criminals E-mail
Washington Post reporter Mike DeBonis wrote an article on "Why Irv Nathan can't prosecute D.C. officials." The reason the D.C. Attorney General lacks legal authority to prosecute ANY criminal violations, including wrongdoing by D.C. officials,  is because D.C. is not a STATE.
Because D.C. is a colony of the United States, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia has all authority for prosecuting criminal violations in D.C. Thus, Federal priorities and Federal budget and staffing limitations govern what cases the U.S. attorney prosecutes. See: http://www.justice.gov/usao/dc/. Crimes that D.C. residents may care about but which don't rise to much importance on a Federal list of priorities don't get much attention. Similarly, our court system is under the control of the Federal Government and judges for the D.C. Superior Court and D.C. Court of Appeals are appointed by the President of the United States and subject to confirmation by the Senate (in which D.C. has NO representation). Only statehood would permanently give the citizens of D.C. the same rights over their criminal justice system as every other American who is a citizen of a state.

D.C. CFO Natwar Gandhi warns U.S. debt default could revive D.C. control board E-mail

On July 27, 2011, the Washington Examiner's Freeman Klopott wrote D.C. Chief Financial Officer Natwar Gandhi warned that if the U.S. government defaults on its debt, this might not be able to borrow the cash it needs to pay its monthly bills, which would trigger the return of the Federal control board for the District of Columbia.

D.C. spending bill delayed indefinitely E-mail

Washington Post reporter Ben Pershing reported on July 19, 2011 that the House of Representatives has postponed consideration of the District of Columbia 2012 budget because it is contained in a larger appropriations bill that includes a controversial provision regarding the mandate to buy health insurance in the Affordable Care Act (President Obama's health care act).  The District portion of bill includes a 10% cut in federal funds to D.C. and a ban on using local D.C. tax funds for abortion services for low-income District women. There is also a fear that House Republicans will try to add additional D.C. budget riders.  With the 2012 fiscal year starting October 1, 2011, time for Congressional action on the D.C. budget is getting short.
