Colby King on Budget Competence and Bluster E-mail

In the May 27, 2011 edition of  The Washington Post, columnist Colbert King compared the budget competence of the U.S. Congress and the D.C. Council.  He wrote: "At one end of Pennsylvania Avenue, visitors could witness D.C. Council members with competing interests come together in the John A. Wilson Building and, working collaboratively, unanimously fashion a plan that eliminated a $322 million deficit with a combination of budget cuts and tax increases. Mayor Vincent C. Gray has announced he will sign the bill. The next step is congressional approval.

In contrast, visitors at the other end of the avenue were treated to the sight of stubborn and undisciplined wusses on Capitol Hill engaging in the equivalent of a legislative food fight even with a $14.3 trillion national debt looming over their heads. This week, the Congress of the United States failed miserably to do anything about the growing federal deficit.

The District deserves to have budget autonomy if for no other reason than to avoid association with that craven Congress."

In other words, what D.C. really needs is statehood.  Then Congress could only do to D.C. what it is willing and legally able to do to all states.

Cheh, others arrested during Capitol Hill protest E-mail

Washington Post reporter Tim Craig reports on the May 4, 2011 demonstration lead by D.C. Council Member Mary Cheh in which the demonstrators blocked Constitution Avenue on Capital Hill for a short time to protest the House of Representatives' vote to permanently ban the District Government's use of D.C. tax money to fund abortion services for low-income D.C. residents.

Stories of the D.C. 41 E-mail

Martin Moulton, president of the Convention Center Community Association (CCCA) was number 39 of the 41 District of Columbia residents arrested by the U.S. Capitol Police during a sit-in demonstration near the U.S. Capitol on April 11, 2011. Along with D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray and half of the D.C. Council, he was protesting the riders Congress added to the D.C. budget bill, a power Congress only has because the District of Columbia is a colony ruled by the 535 people elected by everyone BUT the residents of the District of Columbia.

Below is Martin's story, the list of the D.C. 41 and some thoughts on their impact.

D.C. angry at budget deal, Obama E-mail

On April 17, 2011, Politico's Joe Williams reported that District of Columbia officials were outraged by President Obama's deal with House Republicans on the budget in which the District was prohibited from using its own tax monies to pay for abortions for poor D.C. residents and Congress forcing it to revive a private-school voucher program. The whole deal only served to emphasize the District's colonial status and why D.C. needs to become a state if D.C. residents are ever to have the fundamental human right to govern themselves and determine how their own local and state governments are run and their tax money spent.

Washington Post on "Bargaining away the District's rights" E-mail
On April 12, 2011, the Washington Post editorial board opined about the President and Congress giving away the rights of the District of Columbia in agreeing to prohibit D.C. from paying for abortions for poor women out of D.C. OWN local funds and in imposing a school voucher program on D.C.  Unfortunately, the Post editorial board thinks a probably unconstitutional vote for our nonvoting delegate would have made a difference. They seem not to understand that the ONLY reason Congress even sees D.C.'s budget and has any say on what is in it is because we are a colony and NOT A STATE.
