How Can I Help?
D.C. Statehood Songbook |
![]() |
Music and song have been important in many liberation movements over the past century, such as the U.S. civil rights movement and the fight against apartheid in South Africa. Rasi Caprice's rap "Free DC" [http://www.myspace.com/caprice202], Leonard, Coleman & Blunt's "Stand Up 4 DC" [http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/stand-up-4-d-c-single/id493572134] and songs like them could play a similar roll in the struggle to get statehood for D.C. We will miss D.C. 's Godfather of Go-Go, Chuck Brown, who died may 16, 2012 at age 75 and his support for D.C. statehood. Below are three famous protest songs with the lyrics revised for the statehood movement: We Shall Overcome original lyrics derived from a gospel song by Charles Albert Tindley with revisions by Pete Seeger and others We shall overcome, We shall overcome, We shall overcome some day; Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe, D.C. shall be a state someday. We'll walk hand in hand, We'll walk hand in hand, We'll walk hand in hand someday; Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe, D.C. shall be a state someday. We shall have our rights, We shall have our rights, We shall have our rights, someday; Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe, D.C. shall be a state someday. We're on to victory, We're on to victory someday; Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe, D.C. shall be a state someday. All Americans around Shall make DC a state someday Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe, D.C. shall be a state someday. ______________________________________________ IF I HAD A HAMMER original words and music by Lee Hays and Pete Seeger If I had a hammer I'd hammer in the morning I'd hammer in the evening All over this land I'd hammer out danger I'd hammer out a warning I'd hammer out freedom for my brothers and my sisters All over D.C.
If I had a bell I'd ring it in the morning I'd ring it in the evening All over this land I'd ring out danger I'd ring out a warning I'd ring out freedom for my brothers and my sisters All over D.C.
If I had a song I'd sing it in the morning I'd sing it in the evening All over this land I'd sing out danger I'd sing out a warning I'd sing out freedom for my brothers and my sisters All over D.C. Well I've got a hammer And I've got a bell And I've got a song to sing All over this land It's the hammer of justice It's the bell of freedom It's the song about statehood for my brothers and my sisters All over D.C. ________________________________________________
Blowing In The Wind original music and Lyrics by Bob Dylan How many roads must a man walk down Before they call him a man How many seas must a white dove sail Before she sleeps in the sand How many times must our rights be denied Before such abuse is forever banned The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind The answer is blowing in the wind
How many years must a mountain exist Before it is washed to the sea How many years can D.C. exist Before we're allowed to be free How many times can Congress turn its head And pretend that it just doesn't see The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind The answer is blowing in the wind How many times must Congress look up Before it can see the sky How many ears must Congress have Before it can hear us cry How many arrests will take till it knows That our freedom has too long been denied The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind The answer is blowing in the wind
