Mayor Bowser on Approval of the Statehood Referendum E-mail
As the vote came in on the statehood referendum, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser posted on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MayorMurielBowser/ November 8, 2016 Overwhelming approval - OVERWHELMING APPROVAL - of DC Statehood. Here's the full statement from Mayor Bowser: "With massive turnout, District residents overwhelmingly voted to continue on our bold, new path to DC Statehood. Today, nearly 80% of District voters cast a ballot for full democracy and citizenship. We pause tonight to celebrate this remarkable milestone in the District's decades-long fight for fundamental fairness, and - with renewed energy and resolve - we will continue the march to convince the next President, Congress and the country that statehood for the District's 672,000 residents is a moral imperative. I am grateful to our residents, to those who participated in the process by voting, and to the hundreds who volunteered their time to draft a state constitution that reflects our shared values. There will be many twists and turns ahead - just like there have been good days and not so good days in DC's history - but we take this monumental step forward together, we can be sure that DC's best days are ahead of us."

Statehood Activist Wally Dickson Dies E-mail

Wallace (Wally) Dickson, a longtime member of of D.C. Statehood - Yes We Can! and an active member of the Cleveland Park business community and the Cleveland Park Citizens Association (CPCA), died of cancer on October 27, 2016 at the Veterans Administration hospice in Washington, D.C.  Wally was 85 years old. He is survived by his daughter Jennifer and son John.

Wally was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, a former Virginia state legislator from Arlington County, a long time resident of Adams Morgan, a business and tax consultant at the Original Tax Center in Cleveland Park and an avid statehood supporter. After hearing Mark Plotkin’s talk on the history of the District of Columbia at the November 2008 CPCA meeting, Wally ignited the current statehood movement with his comment that if ever there was a time to achieve statehood, it was now, after President Obama’s election. He inspired the formation of D.C. Statehood - Yes We Can! to organize volunteers to lobby for statehood at President's Obama's January 2009 inauguration. The rest is history. All statehood supporters owe him a lot.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 3 p.m. in the Charham Court Lobby at 1707 Columbia Road, N.W, Washington, D.C.
