D.C. Statehood Rap

Voting Rights

Today is Emancipation Day in the District, the commemoration of the day President Lincoln freed the slaves in D.C.in 1862. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) has proposed eliminating the day off for D.C. government workers next year as a way to save money (the city pays holiday rate overtime to critical employees).

Today, there were small celebrations to mark the occasion around town, including a rally on Franklin Square for D.C. representation in Congress. At the event, rapper Rasi Caprice distributed a CD featuring his "Free D.C." song calling for statehood, which name checks all sorts of local causes. Our favorite line: "They build stadiums and taxpayers pay for them. But repairments for our schools, we gotta wait for them, and yet they wonder why the youth got hate for them."
