Statehood Bills in 114th Congress (2015-2016)

On January 13, 2015,D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton introduced in the 114th Congress H.R. 317, the New Columbia Admission Act,that would shrink the District of Columbia as the Seat of Government of the United States to the Federal monumental core of the present District and admit the residential and commercial parts of the present District as the 51st State, the State of New Columbia. The bill was introduced with 93 cosponsors, a record number.  By the end of the session, there were 133 cosponsors from 33 states and 4 territories, plus the sponsor from D.C..

On June 25, 2015, Senator Thomas Carper (D-DE) introduced the Senate companion bill , S. 1688, with an historic number of original cosponsors - 17 senators from 13 states, including both senators from Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, and Vermont. Sen. McCaskill  (D-MO), Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI) joined the list by the end of the session, making a total of 20 cosponsors from 16 states, or 21 senators with the sponsor Senator Carper.

In the 113th Congress, the House version of the New Columbia Admission Act (H.R. 292) had 112 cosponsors and the Senate companion bill (S. 132) had 20, including the entire Democratic (majority) leadership.

We need to get even more sponsors and cosponsors on new statehood bills in the 115th session of Congress (2017-2018).  To do so, requires help and work by the people of D.C. and friends of liberty and democracy from across the country.
